ÚČELOVÉ VĚTY

1. to . . .  používáme, je-li v hlavní i vedlejší větě stejný podmět.

Examples: I went out to post a letter.

            A friend of mine phoned to invite me to a party.

            We shouted to warn everybody of the danger.

            This wall is to keep people out of the garden.

            I need a bottle opener to open this bottle.

2. so that . . . používáme:
1. když je ve vedlejší větě zápor          

      I hurried so that I wouldn’t be late.

      I whispered so that nobody else would hear our conversation.

            b.   když v hlavní větě je jiný podmět, než ve větě vedlejší

                  I gave her my address so that she could contact me.

                  We wore warm clothes so that we wouldn’t get cold.

                  Please arrive early so that we can start the meeting on time.

                  He spoke very slowly so that everybody could understand.

                  I slowed down so that the car behind would be able to overtake.

-         ve vedlejší větě je v přítomném čase can, v minulosti could, nebo will/would
